World Baking Day

Baking for your pets can be a great way to have fresh high value treats.  If you like baking, it can be a fun way to bond with your dog or cat.  If your pet is on a specialized or prescription diet, please check with your vet before trying any new treats.

Many dogs enjoy peanut butter.  Peanut butter can be a great base ingredient for making your own dog treats.  Just be sure that your peanut butter does not contain any birch sugar or xylitol.  Here is a recipe that both my dog and I enjoy.  If you have peanut allergies in your home, you can use sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter.

If you are making your treats in silicone molds, using a creamy peanut butter will give you a better smooth fill that doesn’t look lumpy when finished.

Peanut Butter Applesauce Dog Muffins

In a mixing bowl combine

  • 1 ½ cups peanut butter
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 eggs (optional) they turn out just fine without these.

Then add

  • 1tsp baking soda
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt

Then add

  • 2 cups oat flour
    • Oat flour can be made by putting regular rolled oats into a blender until they are flour like consistency.

Spoon into silicone molds for fun shaped treats or drop onto a cookie sheet for muffin top treats.

Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool before sharing.  If using silicone molds, place them on a cookie sheet to prevent the bottom of the muffins from burning.
